Completed Games

Spunk and Moxie

Platform: PC, Mobile (iOS & Android)

Release: 2016, 2013 (mobile)

This was my first commercial release. It is a deceptively casual looking hardcore platformer with intuitive one-touch controls. The game is easy to pick up but hard to master. It features 30 levels across 3 themes, 7 challenges per stage, online leader boards, downloadable ghosts, unlockable content, and more.

We originally developed this game on mobile and it is currently available PC and both iOS and Android devices. I created the concept, design, prototype, placeholder art, level design, and directed the game, which was programmed by Carter Randolph and features art by Dan Fessler.

The game got featured on both Apple and Android stores and players gave the game an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars on both platforms.

The Indie Game Legend

Platform: PC

Release: 2011

This project was developed with Game Maker in the span of about 4 months and released in March of 2011. I created it as both an homage to one of my favorite NES games, The Guardian Legend, and a parody of various indie game developers from the TIGSource community. This game is a retro themed top-down shooter that emphasizes exploration, action, and puzzle solving.

Music by Stevie Hryciw and manual art by Dan Fessler.

Works in Progress

MADHOUSE

Platform: PC

Status: Currently in Development

This is a retrostylized top-down PvP shooter with a "comic horror" theme. The original game was developed in 2004 through 2007 and garnered a small online following as well as a positive reception at two TIGJams, where it was played in a tournament among 20 players. For years, I have wanted to bring the game beyond local multiplayer and into online play, and that is one of the major goals of this current project.

Apart from online functionality, the new game will feature graphical updates, design improvements, and entirely new gameplay features that include sprinting, jumping, strafing, and two planes of depth (upper and lower levels that can be traversed via stairs and jumping). Graphically, characters will now feature 8 directions of movement instead of 4. Instead of only having two players, up to four players will be able to play 5 different game modes including Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, King of the Hill, and Last Man Standing, in the format of "every man for himself" or as teams, locally or online.

11 of the previously playable characters will be present, along with 4 new ones, to make a total of 15 playable characters, each with their own unique stats and special abilities.

All of the original weapons - Bombs, Chainsaws, Shotguns, and Flamethrowers (to name a few) - will also be included, as well as a few new ones in more exotic flavors such as Freeze Rays, Saw Guns, and Hyper Cannons, making a total of 20 different weapons. There will also be new power ups as well, including Jetpacks, Suicide Vests, and Night-Vision Goggles. Players will battle across familiar (albeit completely redesigned) stages like the Graveyard, Sewers, and Abandoned Carnival, as well as some never seen before locations like the Junkyard, Egyptian Tomb, and Laboratory. There will be a total of 10 diversely themed stages each featuring their own unique gameplay mechanics.

Apart from all of this, there's a ton of "under the hood" features and balancing that can't be seen here, like "smarter" drops from chests, better character balancing, and critical special abilities (to name a few), all of which are detailed in the 40-page and growing design document that I'm writing. In the meantime, if you'd like to check out the original game, you can download it below but be warned; this version of the game is over 7 years old now and doesn't reflect the quality and amount of new features that will be implemented in the new game! Also, for the full experience, play it with a friend!

Solipsius

Platform: PC

Status: On Hold

Solipsius is a dark and surreal point & click adventure game that features various arcade style minigames. Unlike traditional adventure games, Solipsius places more emphasis on interacting with the environment than it does on puzzle solving. This game is meant to be an ambient and atmospheric experience that frequently breaks the fourth wall to play tricks on the mind of the player and to ultimately pose an existential question.

By interacting with pre-rendered 3D environments, the game tells the story of a highschool youth living in mid-1980s suburbia, a time before cell phones and home computers were common household commodities. This youth is enjoying his last summer vacation by visiting the local arcade, which allows the player to experience a variety of minigames. There is one cabinet that is "off limits" to the player, a game called Solipsius. Upon finding a way to sneak into the arcade at night and play this game, the player character's life is never the same.

The title is a portmanteau of solipsism and Polybius; the former a philosophical concept that only one’s own consciousness can be known to exist, and the latter a forbidden arcade game of urban lore. This game is what I would consider the spiritual successor to The Grifter (see the Horror page for more details.)

Sword of Legends

Platform: PC

Status: Discontinued

Sword of Legends was to be a sidescrolling action RPG that mixed traditional RPG elements with "Metroidvania" style exploration and progression. I began developing the game as the designer and pixel artist in 2006, with the help of fellow indie dev Troy Thompson as the game's programmer. Our progress on development was sporadic but ultimately ended around 2009 when Troy decided he could no longer take on a project of this scale.

Had it been finished, the game would have told the story of a boy named Adon, the son of a legendary warrior who fought and died to seal away evil. Shortly after the story begins, Adon's village is raided and his father's sacred sword is stolen. Adon embarks on a quest to retrieve the sword with the help of his father's heroic companions. Adon travels the land, exploring forests, caves, and towns, taking to the high seas on a ship that takes him to other lands like a vast desert continent, a frozen tundra, and various hidden islands.

Despite the game's discontinuation, I feel that it is a project that might be worth revisiting someday from a fresh start. There is a playable demo that features the story introduction as well as the game's mechanics and features.
